For over 30 years, JTB has been dedicated to developing and nurturing interest in the law among young persons from socioeconomic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds underrepresented in the legal profession. Our pipeline programs are 100% free and provide JTB Leaders with opportunities that support their academic growth and legal aspirations.

Summer Judicial Internship Project

(Law Students) The annual Summer Judicial Internship Project’s (“SJIP”) goal is to provide highly qualified law students from socioeconomic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds underrepresented in the legal profession with summer judicial internships in the chambers of federal and state appellate judges, federal district judges, and federal bankruptcy and magistrate judges. The Project is national in scope and seeks to place approximately 100 law students as judicial interns across the country.

Share the Wealth Judicial Law Clerk Program

(Law Students) The Share the Wealth Judicial Law Clerk Program is a referral program run by judges. Participating judges screen qualified law student applicants, conduct panel interviews with twenty (20) students, and consider them for full-time clerkship positions. At the conclusion of this initial process, students who are not extended an offer by one of the judges may have their application packages shared with additional judges who have requested information on applicants through JTB.

Jumpstart

(Law Students) The Jumpstart Program is an annual preparation program designed to help Chicago-area law students develop the academic and inter-personal skills to navigate law school and become successful legal professionals. Under the leadership of the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism, Jumpstart plays a key role in the effort to ensure that the legal profession better reflects the population that is served throughout the court system in the US.

Law School 101 (Virtual)

(Undergrad) Law School 101 is a virtual undergraduate program that exposes undergraduates to the various legal career paths and helps them navigate the law school admissions process. Students can look forward to a 30-minute attorney panel discussion that covers the essential skills necessary to succeed in law school and 1-hour student breakout sessions where students have the opportunity to ask lawyers questions and delve more deeply into the law school admission process as well as the skills needed for law school and legal careers.

Ready. Set. Law.

(Undergrad) Ready. Set. Law. is a program designed to help undergraduate students prepare for the law school admissions process, explore the skills required to succeed in law school, and gain exposure to legal career paths. The program includes a law school tour, admissions presentation by law school faculty, the opportunity to audit part of a 1L course, panel hosted by campus affinity group leaders; and networking luncheon or reception with volunteer attorneys and law school alumni.

SJIP Office Hours

(Law Students) SJIP Office Hours is a virtual program designed to help law students learn about summer judicial internships and careers in bankruptcy. Students will meet judges and lawyers who are ready to answer questions about getting hired, professional etiquette, judicial internships, and different practice areas. The program is a partnership between JTB and the BIDEA Consortium.

In 2024, SJIP placed more than 100 law students in prestigious judicial internships with judges across the country—providing unparalleled access to the courtroom and hands-on experience at the heart of the legal system.
